Open car transport

A widely available and cost-conscious way to transport most everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs nationwide.

What is open car transport?

Open transport carries vehicles on the familiar open-sided trailers commonly seen on highways. A trailer may carry several vehicles on one route, which helps make this the standard choice for dealerships, auctions, relocations, and personal vehicle moves.

Quick answer

Open transport is usually the best-value option for a normal daily driver. The vehicle is secured to a commercial car carrier but remains exposed to ordinary weather and road conditions during transit.

When open transport makes sense

  • Daily drivers, family cars, pickups, crossovers, and SUVs
  • Vehicles purchased from a dealer, auction, or private seller
  • Household, military, college, and seasonal moves
  • Customers prioritizing availability and value

Open transport does not mean careless transport. Vehicles are loaded and secured using equipment designed for auto hauling. The difference is that the trailer is not fully enclosed.

What should you expect?

Pickup and delivery dates are generally provided as windows because carriers must coordinate several vehicles, traffic, weather, legal driving hours, and customer access. The driver gets as close to each address as safely and legally possible. When a neighborhood cannot accommodate the truck, the parties arrange a nearby meeting point.

Before pickup, document the vehicle’s condition with clear photos. At delivery, compare the vehicle against the pickup report before signing.

Open versus enclosed transport

Choose based on the vehicle rather than price alone. Open shipping fits most standard vehicles. Enclosed transport offers added shielding from weather and road debris and is often preferred for high-value, low-clearance, restored, exotic, or show vehicles.

Open transport questions

Will my car get dirty?

It may collect ordinary dust, rain, or road film because the trailer is open. Wash the vehicle enough to document its condition before pickup.

Is open transport insured?

The assigned motor carrier should maintain cargo coverage. Review the carrier’s coverage and the shipment terms before pickup.
